Kolkata Fire First Pictures: Kolkata fire: 24 killed


A major fire broke out today afternoon in the multi-storeyed Stephen Court building at 18A Park Street of the city. At least two persons were killed and many others trapped and injured when a devastating fire broke out in an old multi-storeyed building on upscale Park Street in south Kolkata on Tuesday.

The death toll in yesterday's devastating fire in a 150-year-old heritage building in Kolkata's upscale Park Street rose to 24 today with the recovery of 18 charred bodies from a staircase leading to the terrace of the seven-storeyed structure overnight.

Dasgupta said he has spoken to the fire services minister and commissioner of Kolkata Police Gautam Mohan Chakraborty about the blaze.

"At least 12 injured people have been removed from the building that has caught fire and one of them is in critical condition. They have been admitted to SSKM hospital," joint commissioner of police Jawed Shamin said.


The fire broke out around 1415 hours yesterday, and started most probably because of an electric fault in a lift between the top two floors of the building,
